What is a Forming Fabric?

A forming fabric is a woven mesh belt made of high-performance polymer yarns. It is used in the wet end of a paper machine to transport pulp slurry and performs three core functions: dewatering, forming the paper web, and transporting the web.

The Working Process of Paper Machine Forming Fabric

The forming fabric operation is a continuous and precise process. The pulp slurry is evenly sprayed onto the forming fabric by the headbox. Under the influence of gravity and vacuum suction, a large amount of water is rapidly removed, and the fibers interweave on the mesh surface, forming the initial structure of the wet web. The wet web then moves with the forming fabric to a vacuum suction box, where further water is removed, increasing the dryness of the paper web and enhancing fiber bonding, thus establishing the initial paper strength. Finally, the paper web is peeled off the forming fabric and transferred to the press section.

Forming Fabric Structural Application and Advantages

  • Single layer forming fabric can be divided into 4 shed, 5 shed and 8 shed. They have good strength and wear resistance. Among them, 8 shed adds a group of yarns with more stable structure, wear resistance and water filtration performance. They are often used in the production of cultural paper, packaging paper, etc.
  • Double layer forming fabric is 8 shed double layer. Sun Hong uses one group of longitudinal and two groups of transverse fibers to make it have a good retention rate. Compared with the single layer forming fabric, the paper making effect is better. It is often used in the production of writing paper and kraft paper.
  • 2.5 layer forming fabric is 16 shed. Sun Hong has a higher fiber retention rate and better support without losing water filtration performance by adding transverse fiber design on the top of the double layer net. It is suitable for medium and high speed paper machines to produce high grade paper grades.
  • Triple layer forming fabric is 24 shed. Sun Hong uses a triple layer structure design. The upper warp and weft yarns are finer, and the lower layer is thicker. Double weft yarns are used in the middle to connect the upper and lower layers. The triple layer forming fabric has the best paper quality, excellent fiber retention index and dehydration efficiency, double warp locking structure, high longitudinal load resistance, and transverse wrinkle resistance. It is widely used in high speed paper machines to produce various types of paper.

Forming Fabric Features

An excellent forming fabric needs to have the following characteristics, which will not only affect the dehydration effect of paper making but also the quality of paper making

  • Excellent dehydration performance: As one of the core functions of the forming fabric, it needs to filter out moisture quickly and neatly.
  • Good forming quality: The forming quality will affect the uniformity and stability of the fiber, effectively reduce the foaming and wrinkling problems of the paper and improve the appearance quality.
  • With excellent edge life, Sun Hong uses the glue edge formed by the glue edge machine imported from Germany to penetrate the mesh. The strong adhesion perfectly solves the edge wear problem of the forming fabric and prolongs the service life.
  • Anti blocking, using a special mesh design to effectively reduce the adhesion of fibers and impurities, easy to clean, keep the mesh surface unobstructed to ensure the dehydration effect.

Maintenance & Care of The Forming Fabric

(1) Check the trajectory, correction, tension, etc. of the forming fabric to ensure uniform lateral tension of the paper machine. Do not run the forming fabric in a relaxed state.
(2) Pay attention to the cleanliness of the mesh table to prevent fiber accumulation from forming pulp blocks and falling to the inside of the forming fabric.
(3) Prevent pulp from accumulating on the mesh roller and breast roller.
(4) Always pay attention to the breast roller scraper to avoid mesh marks and excessive water on the breast roller.
(5) Maintain the spray water temperature and pH value consistent with the pulp.
